The old nut on this fiddle is too low on the 'e' string side, and seems to have been taken from another fiddle, in that it's slightly under-width as well.
It also has a damaged peg (a twist fracture in the shaft),
and an open seam.
Get the old nut off using lots of hot water and a palette knife. And patience.

Chop a lump off an old black piano key supplied by owner...
...and shape roughly to size.

Glue peg together, crack up, and nut on.
21/12/11
Mask off the new nut, finish shaping and cut string slots.
Eh, violá!
Tune up a few tones flat and let things settle.
A bit more filing, and finished.
